Wage war in a chaotic real-time strategy sim from the solo dev behind The Backrooms 1998
[Malta, June 9, 2025] – Steelkrill Studio, the solo developer behind the NYX Award-winning The Backrooms 1998, is charging into new territory with Medievaly: Battle Simulator, a real-time strategy and battle simulation hybrid launching on Steam July 16, 2025. A free playable demo is now live as part of June’s Steam Next Fest, giving players an early chance to wage war with villagers, siege weapons, and yes—elephants.
Medievaly: Battle Simulator may look playful at first glance, with its colorful, low-poly aesthetic, but beneath the surface lies a real-time battlefield full of tension, consequence, and precision. Every decision matters as players command live units in combat, earn gold from fallen enemies, and immediately reinvest those resources into fresh reinforcements. Battles unfold in real time with no pause, no reset, and no second chances—demanding players adapt quickly or face the collapse of their defense.
Players can send in archers to cover flanks, deploy siege rams to batter enemy gates, unleash elephants to smash through tight formations, or even summon farmers mid-battle to generate more gold for continued recruitment. There’s no one-size-fits-all strategy; the battlefield evolves constantly, and survival requires intuition, experimentation, and a deep understanding of how to manage risk under pressure. Emotional, orchestral music underscores each clash, setting the tone for what is, at its core, a serious tactical experience wrapped in a deceptively charming visual style.
While most battle simulators automate combat or lean into physics-driven comedy, Medievaly: Battle Simulator demands active control. Players aren’t just spectators, they’re generals, engineers, and economists all at once. The more efficient their decisions, the longer players will survive. The more creative the approach, the more satisfying the victories.
The full game includes a robust Campaign Mode, where players rise from humble beginnings to fight increasingly difficult battles in a series of handcrafted scenarios. Each level becomes a puzzle of positioning, timing, and resource optimization. Once a level is complete, players can return via the Level Select mode to replay and refine their strategy. For those seeking endless experimentation, Sandbox Mode allows players to craft their own encounters with custom settings and hand-made maps. Meanwhile, Survival Mode drops players into a frantic, escalating battle where the goal is simple: survive ten brutal minutes without being overrun.
Whether it's crushing enemy forces with a last-minute cavalry charge or outlasting them with carefully timed reinforcements, Medievaly: Battle Simulator is built to reward smart play and improvisation. Its replayability comes not just from its multiple modes and maps, but from the unpredictable, ever-changing nature of real-time combat itself. No two battles unfold the same way, and no strategy is guaranteed to succeed twice.
For Steelkrill Studio, best known for The Backrooms 1998, this marks a bold and refreshing creative shift. “This is the first game I’ve released in years that isn’t in the horror genre. While horror has always been a passion of mine and something I truly love - I’ve long had the desire to explore other genres and express myself through different styles of gameplay. For a while, I held back, hesitant to take that ‘ creative risk’. But I finally decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone and try out new possibilities with an open mind! As also a fan of low-poly visuals and aesthetics, I wanted to create something that felt both fun and strategic. That’s how Medievaly: Battle Simulator was born!”
With its launch set for July 16 and a free demo now live for Steam Next Fest, Medievaly: Battle Simulator is ready to put players' tactics and their reflexes to the test. Colorful on the outside, brutal at its core, it’s a battlefield where strategy isn’t optional and chaos is guaranteed. Follow Steelkrill Studio on Twitter/X to stay up to date.
