Gather the Black Army, bend the rules of chess, and battle through a fractured roguelike kingdom.

[Poland – June 25, 2026] The board is shattered. The rules no longer make sense. And the king is still missing. Once A Pawn A King, the asymmetric turn-based roguelike from Clover Bite and publishing platform indie.io, officially launches into Version 1.0 today on Steam, the indie.io Store, and Indie Pass.

Inspired by the timeless strategy of chess but unconstrained by its traditions, Once A Pawn A King transforms familiar pieces into a party of adventurers navigating a world where every match has gone terribly wrong. Players assemble an army of pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, and more, then venture through an ever-shifting castle ruled by the tyrannical White King in a quest to rescue the beloved Black King.

Classic chess tactics meet roguelike unpredictability as fractured boards, randomized encounters, and powerful upgrades ensure that no two runs unfold the same way. Every piece recruited brings new possibilities, every battle demands careful positioning, and every loss can dramatically reshape a run. Success comes not from memorizing openings or studying chess theory, but from adapting to constantly changing situations and finding creative solutions to impossible-looking challenges.

Designed to be approachable for both chess veterans and complete newcomers, Once A Pawn A King focuses on experimentation and strategic decision-making rather than traditional chess mastery. Players learn by playing, discovering synergies between pieces, uncovering new strategies, and gradually mastering a game that deliberately refuses to follow its own rules.

Set within a decaying world trapped in an endless chess match, the game combines strategic depth, party-building progression, and roguelike replayability into a fresh interpretation of one of history's most recognizable games. Every run offers new opportunities to push deeper into the castle, strengthen the Black Army, and uncover the mysteries behind a kingdom locked in perpetual conflict.

Once A Pawn A King is available now on Steam and the indie.io Store, with a 35% discount. Players can also access the game through Indie Pass and begin their campaign against the White King today.
