Fight turn-based jRPG-style battles in a high stakes struggle for a dying writer's life

[Greece – June 25, 2025] – DeadPixel together with indie.io is proud to announce the release of the studio's debut title, Second Chances: A turn-based jRPG-style adventure set in a world between life and death. Players become a burned-out fantasy author whose life is on the verge of collapse, before a horrific car crash throws him into limbo. His only chance for survival is to face a world born out of his blockbuster books and earn his resurrection.

And earn he will: Second Chances wraps Paul Kimble's story of burnout and struggle between profit and art around classic gameplay inspired by jRPG classics. Stuck in the space between the land of the living and the afterlife, Paul's quest will put him in touch with other souls stuck in between, slowly coming to grips with his collapsing life almost ended by the car crash. But before he can heal, he will have to kill: His journey takes him across worlds inspired by his blockbuster fantasy series, facing challenges blending fantasy with realism.

Earning his second chance takes place through a sophisticated turn-based combat system inspired by jRPG classics. Players will need to carefully plan their attacks, keeping in mind the order of actions, balancing health, magic, and ability pools, all while keeping tabs on their enemies and the vulnerabilities they carry. As Paul grows in power, confronting the maddening creations of the Void, so does his party, ripped straight from his books, evolving into new classes at Kimble's discretion.

However, it's not all about meta: Growth in power is matched by personal growth, as the plucky author faces the demons that plagued him in real-life. The success of his seven-volume epic high fantasy series has brought him nothing but misery, driving him to escapism through alcohol and ill-advised relationships. The car crash that put him on the brink of death also puts him on a path towards healing, confronting and dealing with the pain that put him in the path of another car after losing his family and friends.

While the game is inspired by jRPGs, DeadPixel deliberately focused on boiling down the experience to its essential components, ignoring conventional wisdom. Instead of grinding away for incremental increases, Paul and his adventuring party are competent fighters right off the bat and what matters is not how hard they swing, but how they use each tool at their disposal. "Every enemy encounter and stage requires a different approach," remarks DeadPixel, "and since there is no grinding involved, the player can focus on their strategic combinations and the building of his party."
